We are very busy these days. My son has his final chartered accountancy exams and my husband spends his days in office and the nights preparing reports for the client meet due on Thursday. I think the stress and tension is driving me crazy. I don’t get normal sleep these days. Infact many a times I feel that my legs have been caught and the uneasy sensation doesn’t let me sleep. I get up in the middle of the night and take a walk to feel better. I hope the stress doesn’t worsen my diabetes
Women are one of their kind. The emotional , intellectual and spiritual capabilities in the right blend make them quite different from men. Infact the women- hormones make them quite different from men folk. Diabetes is one condition which is evident in many women today. The above paragraph is also the story of millions of women globally. However, the concern today is that insomnia, stress and anxiety are misunderstood and wrongly diagnosed in place of much different disorders…Restless Leg Syndrome, being one among them.

RLS (Restless leg syndrome) is a condition where the legs get uneasy to such an extent that they can’t remain at rest. Any situation where in the legs are supposed to rest makes the patient uncomfortable. The legs may seem to be caught or insects might seem to creep on the legs. This increases the discomfort to such an extent that sitting in one place, traveling long hours, performing normal daily activities and other routine affairs becomes impossible. The major concern is that the disease is so sparsely known that many a times even practitioners mistake the symptoms to reflect other disorders like anxiety, stress and insomnia.
Restless leg syndrome is an idiopathic disease with an unknown cause. However there are certain states which increase the risk of developing Restless leg syndrome. Some of the diseases increasing the rislk of contracting RLS are diabetes, kidney failure, high blood pressure etc. At times, PLMD or periodic limb movement disorder may also develop simultaneously with RLS. These symptoms may vary from mild to moderate to major symptoms. Mild symptoms may occur less than once a week, moderate symptoms would occur once or twice a week and major symptoms develop more than twice a week.
Research is being carried out to understand the aetiology of Restless legs syndrome . Dopamine is a hormone which is secreted by ductless glands in the body and which governs musculoskeletal movements as well as neuromuscular balance. Infact the information flows from one hemisphere of the brain to another with the help of this hormone only.
Though the diagnosis of Restless legs syndrome is difficult, the disorder is best managed by controlling the primary disease associated with it. Once the Restless legs syndrome goes out of control, the neuromusculo coordination becomes difficult to achieve and the nervous system is also disturbed. Hence, diabetes doesn’t stop at itself, there are many links of disorders attached. There is an urgency to call for attention and take charge of Diabetes, the precursor of diseases.
