The Ayurveda Conference 2008 at Rishikesh

I have registered for this year’s Ayurveda Conference at Rishikesh and am eagerly looking forward to attending it. Some, very eminent and great Gurus are descending here to show us light like Dr. Robert Svoboda, Dr. David Frawley, Swamini Mayatitananda Saraswati etc.

To quote from Dr. Svoboda’s book on Prakriti (your bodily constitution), he clearly explains why Ayurveda is not just magic-pill science.

I quote, “Many Westerners will study Ayurveda in hopes of finding miracles that will allow them to continue to go about their self-indulgent ways. Though they may find temporary relief this way, permanent relief will come only with permanent changes in lifestyle. These people cheat themselves in the same way that people who flock after miracle-mongers in hope of effortless spiritual advancement cheat themselves. Ayurveda is designed for those who are ready to take responsibility for themselves.

Ayurvedic treatment for Ringworm or “Tinea”

Ringworm is a skin-infection caused by fungi. Today, we describe the ayurvedic way to treat ringworm using common ingredients found at home. Garlic is the principle remedy here.

  • Early morning, when you rise, take half tsp. of Sea-salt with a glass of warm water.
  • After about half an hour, take a metal tumbler, or a bowl and crush a fresh garlic-pod in it. Add 50 ml of fresh unsalted, plain Yoghurt (curd/dahi) and half tsp. of turmeric powder in it. Churn it well and drink it. Please do not eat anything for next 60 mins.
  • Drink the same Yoghurt mixture in step 2 in the evening at sunset, leaving a teaspoon of this potion for local application on the affected area (where you have the ringworm)
  • Every 2 days, add 1 more garlic pod to the mixture, i.e. from the 3rd day, take 2 pods of garlic in 50 ml of Yoghurt, from 5th day, take 3 garlic pods and so on…
  • While sea-salt, garlic and turmeric kill the yeast, fungi and other intestinal bacteria, yoghurt helps to replenish the friendly bacteria and aids in digestion.
  • You can also apply lemon juice and apple cider vinegar topically on the ringworm if you can bear the stinging. Tea-tree oil would also help. Honey, applied locally and taken internally would also help.

The Right Ayurvedic diet can keep you drug-free

Just heard this ayurvedic proverb and thought I would share it with you all.

“When the diet is wrong, medicine has no effect - and when the diet is right, medicine is not needed”

Pin this up on your wall, friends. Its true and helps you to keep away from allergies and dreadful symptoms. Let me give you a simple recipe for Khichadi.

Note : You can get Moong Dal or Bengal Gram from some Indian Grocery Store.

  • 1 1/2 cups Basmati rice, washed, soaked in water for 1/2 hour and drained
  • 1/2 cup Bengal Gram Dal(Green Lentils also called Moong Dal), washed, soaked in water for 1/2 hour and drained. Soak the Dal and rice ahead time and then get all the other ingredients together.
  • 5 teaspoons butter or oil
  • 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
  • 2 to 3 Whole Cloves
  • 6 peppercorns
  • 1/4 th teaspoon Black pepper powder
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 3 cups boiling or hot water

Garnish
1 teaspoon of ghee (Clarified Butter)
Fresh coriander leaves

In a large saucepan, melt the butter or oil over moderate heat. When the foam subsides for the butter, add the cloves, peppercorns, black pepper powder and bay leaf add the onion and fry, stirring occasionally, for 4 minutes. Continue sautéing, stirring occasionally, for 3 minutes or until the onion is soft and translucent but not brown.
Add the rice, moong daal, salt and turmeric. Stir and toss the mixture gently. Reduce the heat to moderately low and stir gently for a minute. Pour in the boiling water and stir once. Cover the pan, reduce the heat to low and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the rice and Moong daal are cooked and tender and all the water has been absorbed. Remove the pan from the heat. Many people like to cook this in a pressure cooker or a rice cooker. Serve at once. Garnish with 1 teaspoon of ghee and some fresh coriander leaves.

This Khichadi is light and should be taken in dinner , especially recommended for alleviating Pitta disorders.

Jaiphal helps in Insomnia

Just a tip. In India, its been a practice in households to drink a huge glass of hot milk mixed with cardamom powder, Nutmeg (Jaiphala), and some Kesar (few strands of Saffron). It helps to relieve stress, and combat insomnia. I hope that helps you as well.
